Your account is a place where you hold a lot of sensitive data, in addition to your beloved characters. It should therefore be safe and protected like a fortress, right? If you agree with this, please read our article below and learn how to make yourself and your Runes of Magic account more secure. Of course, we aren’t telling you that nothing will happen. We just want to help you minimize the risks. Please find below some tips and how to’s in order to keep your account as the safest possible.

Unauthorized access occurs, in most cases, when a user shares with someone their login information (username and password). Sure, you may trust someone in real life and he/she may not manipulate you to get your login information, but can you be sure that the computer your friend uses is clean and safe? The best solution in order to avoid undesirable situations is not sharing your account details (username and/or password) with anyone.

Login information protection (username and/or password) is important for other reasons. The practice of “phishing” is the most common strategy used by bank account thieves. Remember, we will never ask you for your login or password information. We will not send you e-mails asking for that information. We don’t need these details, as we have different tools in order to help you. If you are ever asked for your login details, please inform us immediately of this incident, since it would mean somebody is trying to access your account.

 Whilst it may be easier to have one password for all of your accounts, remember that it also means that they are more insecure. Passwords should be different for each account. Furthermore, your passwords should be known only by you. If you really want to be safe, please:

• use different passwords for the accounts your control
• use CAPITAL letters, regular letters and numerals
• if possible, please change your passwords frequently (let’s say once/3 months)

Note: About strong passwords and how to create them

If you really want to have a strong and safe password, you should not use references like your birthday, the name of your cat or your favourite teacher. Your friends may discover your password by having casual discussions with you. This is why it is better to avoid them when choosing a password. Other examples of passwords that are often used (and thus, easy to guess) are curse words and insults.

Don’t forget that the password needs to be strong, but you should still be able to remember it. We all know people who remember their bank account numbers, all their friends’ birthdays and what was the winning number of the lottery yesterday. Yet there are also people who can’t remember their phone numbers. Choose your password wisely and change/modify it, on a regular basis.

Of course, everyone would like to have password with 26 signs, including regular signs, capitals, digits, etc. However, can you honestly remember combinations like “Gssjk.WkutrY28.87oTo00987a”?

If so, you’re lucky! If not, why not try to use something you know, but well hidden.

In example, you can try to use something from your life. This can be your motto, part of favourite poem, etc. How to hide it well and be protected? You can, for example...

• Delete the first letter from the first word, delete second from the second, third from the third. Remove vowels.
• Or replace each and every letter “T” and “t” with numerals, starting with 9 and going down to 0.
• Or even use another technique!

There are hundreds of possibilities. All you need to do is think and combine! Just a small tip: do not share your idea with anyone.

Please also keep in mind and obey the golden rule:

One account = one password

You should not use the same password for each and every account you control. One password for your email account, another one for your game account, another one for your bank account, and so on.

What about addons? Indeed, they are very popular and many players use them. Sadly, some people try to turn our community’s creativity and helpfulness against them by injecting computer viruses and other malware (including keyloggers) into otherwise legitimate player-made add-ons. At the very least, this can break your game installation or make you lose the account; at the worst, it can lead to irreparable damage to your computer. Your in-game account might be the smallest thing you’ll lose. If you are using addons, you are doing this at your own risk and should you choose to use them, please make sure you’re taking them from a place you can trust.

Malicious websites target your browser’s weak spots by attempting to install harmful software on your computer, with results similar to malicious add-ons. If you want to prevent this from happening:

Make sure the web browser, OS and protection software you use is always updated.

Remember, goldsellers and those who give you instructions on “how to cheat” don’t care about you. The only thing they care about is their profit. It has happened in the past that goldselling and cheat-distributing sites contained malware aimed at the games they were exploiting. Playing fair and honest means playing safer.

What if there was an unauthorized access to my account?

First of all, stay calm. Make sure your computer is safe. You can do this easily by scanning it with your most updated protection software. Remember you don’t need to spend hundreds of Euros to be safe. There are also free programs that protect your computer, such as: 

• AVG Anti – Virus
• Avira Free Antivirus
• Microsoft Security Essentials
• avast! Free Antivirus
• Comodo Internet Security

Make sure your OS is updated. Updating your operating system is the most critical and most simple of all the methods for securing your computer. Please visit the Microsoft Update site for information about Microsoft Windows Automatic Updates, or your OS’ website accordingly.

Change your game account passwords.

From your account, you can change your account password through the Account Management System and your password for the game through the Runes of Magic Website. 

Create a strong password! Make sure your password is something new and unique, using letters, CAPITAL LETTERS and numbers.

• Support may take some time to answer, especially when they have many tickets due to a big issue.
• The best way to report a problem to support is clearly and concisely. This way you can ensure that you get the quickest possible resolution to your problem.
• One problem = one ticket. Please don’t send us multiple tickets for one problem only, in order to avoid overlaps between the teams.

• To whom did it happen ? (Character name)
• What happened exactly?
• When did it happen? (Be precise as possible)?
